Det er  sannsynligvis malt sommeren 1881 \u2013 en av de f\u00e5 somrene Kielland og Backer ikke dro til Norge for \u00e5 male p\u00e5 J\u00e6ren el. Denne sommeren fikk de nemlig begge v\u00e6re med Pelouse og to av hans mannlige elever p\u00e5 et langt studieopphold i landsbyen Rochefort en Terre i Bretagne. Det mer kjente bildet \"Korn\u00e5ker i Rochefort\" (i privat eie) ble sannsynligvis malt samme sommer. Det var p\u00e5 dette stedet Backer fant sine f\u00f8rste bondeinteri\u00f8rer, mens Kielland malte b\u00f8ndenes liv ute p\u00e5 markene eller kvinner i arbeid og hvile - ved en vaskeplass, p\u00e5 en \u00e5ker eller hvilende under tr\u00e6r i en eng.
